Review

Kevin Callan has written a marvelously entertaining and helpful book for
anyone who might enjoy canoeing within a day’s drive of Toronto. His
talents as naturalist, photographer, teacher, and writer are displayed
in a guidebook that is not only a joy to read and to look at, but a font
of information for the day tripper or weekender. His routes cover four
areas: Georgian Bay, Muskoka, the Haliburton Highlands, and the
Kawarthas. Included are meticulous maps indicating portages, linings,
campsites, and other landmarks, along with striking pictures of local
flowers, wildlife, and scenery, and fascinating historical background.
Callan includes a helpful bibliography and comprehensive fish-species
tables, as well as information on the total number of campsites for
nearly 100 lakes, creeks, and rivers. Hints on gear and doses of welcome
humor round out the book’s artistry. Intended more for the novice or
intermediate canoeist, it fills a real void and answers the question
“Where can we go for a real getaway this weekend?”
