Review

This second edition of Jayne Seagrave’s bestselling guide incorporates
new parks and campgrounds created since the first edition was published
in 1997 and, like the first edition, is a product of several years of
personal experience camping throughout British Columbia.

The guide’s first chapter, “The Camping Experience,” outlines
what one can generally expect on arrival at camp, what potential hazards
one might encounter and how to avoid them, and what to take. The rest of
the book is divided into nine chapters representing the nine tourist
regions of the province. The campground listings for each region are
organized alphabetically, and each site is featured in a page-long
summary that describes its location, facilities, and recreational
activities and that includes general information such as the history of
the area, the origin of names, or a personal experience the author had
at the site.

Seagrave concludes the book with several possible itineraries for one-,
two-, and three-week camping tours (e.g., “A Little Taste of the
Province,” “The Hiker’s Dream,” and “Fruit and Freedom”); a
section of special-interest camping suggestions for divers, canoeists,
birders, and hot-spring soakers; and a section on campground cooking,
complete with recipes.

All in all, the guide makes an excellent compact reference for planning
a camping vacation or keeping the map packet in a car or recreational
vehicle for road-trips through the province.
