Review

In this book, Tom Harpur turns his attention to the fundamental question
of human existence. Humanity, he implies, was put here to love as Christ
loves, and the Christian religion must repent in order to promote that
love. Typically, Harpur seeks to promote a worldwide, totally ecumenical
commitment to spiritual love.

The book, though clearly written and accessible, lacks depth of
argument. Harpur’s discussion of life after death is merely a summary
of his book on the same. While amusing (particularly in its barbs
against the author’s critics), The God Question does not
satisfactorily prove its assertions. Still, the liberal theology
expressed here will no doubt please modern theologians and religious
thinkers. Traditionalists and conservatives will utterly abhor it,
especially Harpur’s conclusion that “not even Christ claimed to be
infallible.”
