Review

Basil Johnston is the author of several books on Ojibway ceremonies,
mythology, and humor. This collection of nine tales translated from the
original language of the people is a further celebration of the heritage
shared by storytellers he has known. They speak of times past; of
mermaids and mermen; of love and human relationships with spirit beings,
of tricksters, wit, and wile; and of seasons imbued with power and
mystery.

Maxine Noel’s bold and graceful figures shimmer with movement and
color—bright reds, greens, and ethereal hues. She succeeds in
depicting both the vigor and delicate feelings expressed in Johnston’s
prose.

These wonderful, mythical tales and delightful illustrations will
enhance any library.
