Review
When a traitorous paid assassin wants to sell the New York Mafia’s
secrets to a U.S. agent and still stay alive, where does he go? To
Toronto, of course. Unhappily for him, so do his Mafia boss, assorted
thugs, and a vacillating double agent. Their desperate machinations are
monitored and manipulated by a couple of reluctant Mafia consuls whose
sole ambition is to excel in hotel management and to keep out of
trouble.
Save for these last two, the characters, such as strongman Bruno and
the “tall, distinguished” G-man, are gangster-movie stereotypes with
matching banal dialogue. The two hoteliers have considerable potential
for a series, but neither their interesting personalities nor the
Toronto setting come alive in this short book. The plot is satisfactory,
and even sufficient for a much longer suspense novel; however, the rest
of the book needs a great deal of work. Correcting the numerous errors
in syntax and punctuation and printing a jacket to fit the book’s size
would be a start.
