Review

William Morris (described in this book as a “poet, artist, designer,
utopian socialist, visionary and astute businessman”) and his circle
encompassed a broad range of production: drawing, painting, glass,
wallpaper, textiles, furniture, jewelry, metalwork, books, and
photography. This superbly illustrated and well-written book was
produced as a companion to the AGO’s 1993 Morris exhibition. Included
are nearly 300 photographs (half in full color), along with essays on
Morris and his colleagues that are enlivened by personal anecdotes and
by quotations from diaries and letters.

The contributors, a distinguished group of scholars, have produced an
academic reference work that is both accessible and fascinating, even
for the lay reader.
