Montreal playwright Colleen Curran’s first novel describes a year in
the life of Lenore, a young woman coming to terms with the fact that
Fergie, her boyfriend of eight years, has abruptly deserted her. This
drastic event is the starting point for a series of radical changes in
her life.
The story is told through Lenore’s unanswered letters to Fergie. As
time passes, Lenore gradually admits to herself that Fergie will not
return and, even more importantly, that she does not want him to; not
only has he betrayed her and abused her trust, but without him she is
having experiences that otherwise would have been closed to her.
The heroine’s down-to-earth tone and sharp sense of humor add a
refreshing undercurrent of wit even to serious events. Lenore brings to
vivid life the friends she makes during her year of discovery—notably
Heidi, her lodger, who is hoping for something drastic to happen in her
own life; and a group of radical feminists, described by Lenore with an
affectionate disrespect.
This fast-paced and amusing novel has a deeply satisfying ending, as
Lenore emerges from a restrictive relationship that was crushing the
life out of her. Many readers will find the novel thought-provoking and
even inspiring; almost all will find it an entertaining and enjoyable
read.
