Review

The premise of this book is that there is a need to combine gardening
information with recipes for home-grown produce. The information on each
vegetable or fruit is arranged alphabetically, from asparagus to
zucchini, and is immediately followed by recipes for each species.
Useful guidelines on picking, preparing (for immediate use), and
preserving (for later use) are given. The book concludes with gardening
tips, such as on garden layout; a plant hardiness map; information on
growing seeds indoors, transplanting, and pest control; sources of seed
catalogues and government publications; a list of first and last frost
dates across Canada; a spring planting chart; a glossary of gardening
terms; and an index.

Despite its length, the book is far from encyclopedic in scope, and
gardeners or cooks may well conclude that their need for information can
be best obtained from more specialized publications.
