Review

For the authors of this book, “Time [in a marathon] isn’t important,
finishing is.” The stretching and weight-training sections provided in
their book are well illustrated, clear, and current. Most of the
training schedules for specific marathon goals are similarly credible,
and the many dynamic black-and-white photographs make one want to lace
up a pair of sneakers. A 52-week log, with headings for day, place, and
distance, takes up the bulk of the book. The technical text is
confusing, particularly in its discussion of target heart rates. The
authors are also incorrect in stating “Don’t let anyone tell you
your arms give you momentum. They are along for the ride.” In sum, the
technical inadequacies of this book outweigh its motivational merit.
