Review
Perhaps the best-qualified garden educator in British Columbia, Newton
provides in this always accurate book a good deal of general gardening
information. Among the subjects covered are garden planning and soil
improvement, pests and nonorganic diseases, lawns, container gardening,
flowers, vegetables, pruning, and bulbs. On the negative side, there’s
something relentlessly declarative in Newton’s style, and there are
problems with the book’s presentation. The teal-blue and black
illustrations are unappealing and the typeface, though large, seems
crowded. The book’s dense presentation places an unnecessary burden on
the reader.
