Review
Ivan Illich is a culture critic who has addressed over the years key
concerns of modern society—education, health care, economics,
development, and gender. By studying both history and different
languages, he aims to place our current belief systems in context and to
explain how perspective shifts through time and across cultures. Illich
is also a wordsmith, who chooses terms carefully, yet idiosyncratically.
This can stand in the way of an immediate grasp of his visions.
Most of this book consists of interviews with Ivan Illich. For readers
unfamiliar with his work, there is a long biographical introduction.
This book is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in creative
doubt, in the questioning of assumptions, and in charting the growth of
ideas.
