Review

This well-bound, pack-sized volume contains “complete topo format
coverage (current to the end of 1994) for all the main spot climbing
areas in the Canadian Rockies except those in the Jasper area. ... It
brings together under one cover for the first time information on routes
in the Bow Valley, Kananaskis Country, Ghost River and Lake Louise
areas.” An introductory chapter contains information on the geology of
the Rockies (sedimentary rock), roping techniques, climbing gear,
weather, insect pests, services, and what the authors call
“environmental awareness.”

The climbs—known by such whimsical names as “Mr. Rogers,”
“Mardi Gras,” “Chocolate Bunnies,” and “Creeping
Senility”—are extremely well documented, and illustrated with route
topographical maps. A full index to more than 1200 climbs is preceded by
a graded list of routes.

Rock-climbing in alpine areas has captured the imagination of a growing
number of enthusiasts. The sport has well-defined rules, and a
vocabulary rich with jargon. This guidebook is recommended for the
aficionado.
