Review

Celebrating Excellence consists of short biographies of more than 200
Canadian women athletes, most of whom have won Olympic gold medals or
world championships. The sheer number of women included is a testament
to the author’s research skills and to the women themselves, many of
whom have trained diligently for years with only a day or two in the
spotlight as a reward. Consequently, many of the names will be
unfamiliar to all but the most ardent fans of amateur sports.

The profiles, ranging from one to three pages in length, are organized
by sport. There are numerous photographs. An index of names makes it
easy to locate a particular athlete. An appendix includes information
about world championships and Olympic gold medals won by Canadian women.

The women profiled in this book have all faced adversity, and few, Long
found, had role models. This wonderful book celebrating their
achievements will undoubtedly inspire today’s young female athletes.
