Review

Ted Plantos has a talent for puns (“Karl Marx / knew all / the
Engels”) that readers will either love or hate. Plantos wears his
irreverence like a badge of honor, poking fun at everything from parades
to Canadian culture to Margaret Atwood. “The Beer and Donuts
Committee” expresses this ultimatum: “We would like to ferment /
some political pressure / and have it written / into the constitution of
this country / that all donut shops from Victoria to Charlottetown /
shall be licensed to serve beer.” Plantos continues this theme in
“Donut in Our Culture” and “The Canadian Constitution and
Donuts.” Some of the jokes may be hard to stomach, but if you like
puns, you’ll love this book.
