Review

Stan Fischler has been writing about hockey for 40 years. Cracked Ice
offers a closeup look at the labor turmoil that has plagued the National
Hockey League since the 1992 strike. Never one to mince words, Fischler
writes that the strike “[was] among the most nauseating events of my
hockey journalistic career.” His candid opinions and personal
recollections are supplemented by interviews with NHL Commissioner Gary
Bettmen, and former Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall. Particularly
interesting—and sobering—is Fischler’s analysis of the
Americanization of what was once Canada’s national game—a game that
has become increasingly driven by business concerns. This book exudes
Fishler’s love of, and concern about, the game.
