Review

During the time he coached university, international, and National
Hockey League teams, Dave Chambers compiled more than 600 hockey drills.
The technical, tactical, and on-ice physical preparation involved in
those drills are illustrated in this book.

The drills are organized according to their level of difficulty, from
simple to complex. Beginning coaches may choose the established drills
because of their effectiveness; more experienced coaches will relish the
visual prompts by which they can easily modify old drills or introduce
new ones.

In the section preceding the drills, Chambers provides an overview of
the established theories on the teaching and achievement of athletic
skills, introducing such terms as chaining, imagery, macrocycles, and
anaerobic alactacid systems to ease the reader into the ever-growing
theoretical aspects of coaching. He also cogently outlines key elements
in the teaching and learning processes. Coaches looking for an in-depth
analysis of such things as the pros and cons of mass versus distributed
practice, however, will have to consult more sophisticated sources.

Few book about hockey tackle the coaching aspects; this one does a
commendable job.
