Review

These essays reflect a wide range of subject matter. There are five
essays on aspects of the theatre, and another five on the literature of
the period. Others deal with such topics as political/social theory and
education, and essentially stand alone.

The collection is intended for scholars, students, or others familiar
with 18th-century studies. Unfortunately for general readers, many of
the quotations are not translated from their language of origin. For the
scholar, the collection is valuable in that it leads to further study.
The footnotes are clear and precise, as (for the most part) is the text.
The most successful essays are those that traverse different subject
areas, and thereby promote interdisciplinary study.

Future proceedings of the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century
Studies will be called Lumen. If this volume is any indication, the
essays will be varied, slightly dry, but worth a look for those
interested in the field.
