Review

Something Happened Here is simply written, but by no means simple. Each
short story is crafted, reduced to its essence, and presented as a gift
to those who, like Levine, are observers of life. There are no
judgmental comments, just descriptions of events in a writer’s life,
many so commonplace that only a gifted writer would see the beauty in
them. The collection fills you with a bittersweet feeling. The detached
way in which Levine describes his mother’s illness, a trip to Dieppe,
and his wife’s death captures the aimlessness of someone familiar with
pain. There are undercurrents and eddies that grip you when you read his
short stories, but they are hidden in deep, still pools of tranquil
words and simple descriptions.
