Review

A Fredericton native, Carolyn Gammon has contributed to numerous poetry,
fiction, and nonfiction anthologies. Lesbians Ignited is her first book.

Strong emotion is the keynote for this collection, whether it is
anger—as in “To a Friend of Fourteen Years,” on being forbidden to
show affection for a female lover while visiting a straight friend—or
lust, as in “Labia-Laughing”: “you make me / do things / with my
tongue / that even I can’t write home about.”

Gammon addresses the political as well as the personal, and makes the
links in poems like “Bad Lesbian Sex” addressing some of the
unspoken truths about the community. “I Will Never Stop” links a
harassing phone call to the need to continue working for human rights.
There are beautiful love poems, humorous poems, even a recipe poem,
“Dildo Fuck Muffins.”

Gammon’s forthright, yet lyrical, style has made her first poetry
collection a valuable one.
