Erling S. J. Van Dam has carved himself a niche in the annals of
Canadian philately as the leading dealer of revenue stamps. He has been
instrumental in bringing this form of collecting from the philatelic
periphery to the mainstream, and there are now thousands of collectors
world-wide.

This 25th anniversary edition of his catalogue brings together all
currently known revenue stamps, as well as duck, wildlife conservation,
and hunting stamps. New sections have also been added on conservation
and revenue meters.

Revenue stamps, unlike regular postage stamps, are used to show that
some kind of tax was paid. They have been around since the 1860s, and
have been issued by all levels of government as well as by wildlife
federations, trade, associations, and other organizations. They include
bill stamps, gas and electricity inspection, weights and measures,
excise, consular fees, law stamps, telephone, playing cards, tobacco,
vacation pay, and prisoner-of-war franks. There are even stamps for the
Halifax law library!

Finely illustrated in color with prices for both uncanceled and used
revenue stamps, this catalogue is indispensable for anyone with an
interest in the field.
