Review

The sequel to the surprise bestseller Griffin and Sabine continues the
story of the lonely Griffin and his imaginary love Sabine, who threatens
to become very real and arrive on Griffin’s doorstep. Sabine’s
Notebook begins with Griffin’s decision to flee in the face of this
threat to his perception of reality. He leaves a note for Sabine that
begins, “If you are reading this, then you exist.” Their subsequent
correspondence traces Griffin’s journey across Europe into Africa,
Asia, and the Pacific. As Griffin travels he comes to terms with the
question of Sabine’s existence and the nature of his own. Sabine’s
letters help that journey and illuminate the woman Griffin created.

While the story of Griffin and Sabine is important, the detailed
illustrations make the book special. Each letter is printed with its own
illustrated card or envelope, and the pictures are as important as the
words. In a case of style as substance, the artwork drives the plot to a
great extent. This story grips the imagination on many levels, and the
third volume will be anxiously awaited.
