Review
This is one of the Homeworld series of how-to manuals. The author takes
the beginning furniture refinisher through clear, step-by-step
instructions for refinishing wood furniture, beginning with establishing
a proper work environment and ending with the waxing and polishing of
the finished article. The process is divided into separate chapters and
each chapter is further divided into subheadings for ease of access to
specific information. At the end of each chapter is a blank page for
notes. A glossary of terms provides further information and detailed
definitions.
Sands stresses that this is not a manual for restoring antiques
(despite the claim made, for some reason, on the jacket), which require
specific care not addressed in this book. Rather, these techniques are
to be used on sturdy, good-quality wood furniture that one wishes to
recycle. A small omission is that no mention is made of how to fill
small cracks or nicks should this be necessary once the furniture has
been stripped. Apart from that, the process is quite clearly described
and the information is organized with the convenience of the refinisher
in mind.
