Review

Vancouver sportscaster Eric Dwyer covers hockey and other major sporting
events. Hockey’s Young Superstars, his first book, looks at 21 players
whom he identifies as the next generation of superstars.

The format of the book is a familiar one. Each “superstar” is
accorded several pages of biography, and each section is illustrated
with action photographs. Unfortunately, many of these photographs are in
black and white, which detracts from the book’s presentation. But the
book rises above the format, in large part because Dwyer writes quite
well. The brief biographies are more than fluff pieces, and the
introduction effectively establishes the author’s belief that hockey
is entering a “golden age,” as players from around the world
congregate in the expanded NHL.

One might quibble with Dwyer’s selection of superstars, and the
boundaries of “young” seem a bit flexible, but this book remains a
surprisingly good read.
