Review

Every so often one comes across a volume that is regrettably far too
short. The Storyteller’s Companion is one such find. The book, the
third in a continuing series, has much to recommend it to pastors and
laity alike. It offers a solid commentary on biblical texts (in this
case, taken from Judges to Kings), combined with entertaining retellings
of the stories, and topped off with rabbinical midrashim (brief stories
told by the Hebrew scholars to complement the texts).

The apparent aim of the book is to train religious educators to teach
the Bible in refreshingly human terms through in-depth study, vibrant
retelling from different perspectives, and reference to the traditional
Hebrew background. In this, it succeeds admirably and at the same time
manages to achieve a splendid combination of education with
entertainment.

Admittedly not written for advanced religious scholars seeking a
serious approach to Old Testament theology, this book is ideal for
pastors, seminarians, and laypersons.
