Review

Hunt, a retired suffragan bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Toronto, has
a well-deserved reputation across Canada and across denominational lines
as an outstanding expository preacher. In this book he puts his
scriptural insightfulness into print as he explores the first nine
chapters of John’s gospel.

The preface does not make it clear, but this volume is organized as a
series of daily meditations for use during the Lenten period, from Ash
Wednesday to Good Friday. Day by day the reader is led through the nine
chapters (with one omission—1:6–13). The passage is listed, a
one-and-a-half page meditation follows, and the day’s entry ends with
a thought, prayer, or question “For Reflection.” This is a book for
those seeking to better understand John’s gospel, for those pursuing a
guided meditation for Lent, and for those hoping to learn, from a master
expositor, how to bring John’s message to life in one’s own daily
existence. None will be disappointed.
