Review

This collection of “unfoldments” (lectures) by the author includes
transcripts of taped and live presentations. The style is that of a
flowery spoken language that almost asks to be read aloud or at least
slowly. The examples are dense with metaphors and passages in the
biblical language of King James. The effect is a curiously formal
19th-century discourse.

Mills depends heavily on quotes from himself, from Mary Baker Eddy,
and, to a lesser extent, from other writers on spiritual topics. His
message is the oft-repeated one of waking up to the transcendent
spiritual nature of being and avoiding the error of identification with
the physical and the material.

The author is clearly a charismatic figure; questions from his audience
are respectfully addressed to “Mr. Mills.” Those who have
experienced him in person may want to have these essays to reflect on.
New readers may find the writing style a barrier to quick understanding,
but then no one ever said that spiritual enlightenment was easy.
