Review

This is an unusually well-put-together homage to the great aircraft of
the past and the men who flew them. John McQuarrie’s knowledgeable
text combines with lush photographs and illustrations by David
O’Malley to recapture the activities of the Royal Canadian Air Force
in World War II.

What is particularly surprising is that each one of the superb
photographs in this book was taken quite recently, catching in-flight
moments of rare, still-operational survivors—from the flimsy Tiger
Moth and cheerfully noisy Harvard trainer, to immortal fighter planes
like the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, and Messerschmitt, right up to
the Vampire, the RCAF’s first jet airplane.

A short selection of wartime recruiting posters with an airforce theme
are also reproduced. Originally seen plastered on hoardings everywhere,
casual throwaway art at the time, these posters have taken on an
artistic life of their own today. ’Til We Meet Again offers a
gloriously illustrated reminder for some, while bringing fresh pleasure
to those who never saw these wonderful flying machines first-hand. An
essential coffee-table book for the aviation buff of any age.
