Review
This guide is intended to help secondary-school students choose the
university and program that is best for them. Estimating that a
four-year program of study could cost $100,000, Gibson advises the
student to research the choices carefully.
Introductory chapters contain exercises that ask the student to perform
a self-assessment. Basic questions about skills, interests, values, and
personal realities are posed, and fill-in-the-blank questionnaires are
provided.
Another form—“questions to ask about universities”—can be
completed in association with talking to university representatives,
school guidance counsellors, and university alumni, and by making a
campus visit. Application procedures are explained for those applying
from high school, who will be using the Ontario Universities Application
Form.
Profiles of 22 universities and colleges provide a descriptive overview
of the institution, followed by facts and figures about enrolment,
facilities, staff, and undergraduate programs. A glossary and an
appendix of addresses for Ontario’s colleges of applied arts and
technology in Ontario conclude the book.
Gibson, the author of Gibson’s Guide to Graduate and Professional
Programs at Ontario Universities and Gibson’s Student Guide to Western
Canadian Universities, teaches in the Faculty of Arts at York
University, where she has also served as Associate Director of
Admissions/Liaison.
