Review
This book explains how oxen (domesticated draft bovines) are trained,
and how their strength is harnessed and applied to a variety of tasks.
The authors both live in southwestern Nova Scotia, oxen country, and
convey this locale through photos and text that show and describe oxen
working on the farm and in the bush, on parade, and competing in pulling
contests. In an example of technology transfer, the skills involved in
the rearing, training, and working of oxen are passed from one
generation to the next. This well-organized and enjoyable book should
find a place in rural libraries as a reminder and a record of days long
forgotten.
