Review

In this clearly written book, economist George Fallis attempts to
clarify for a general audience the economic costs of the various
scenarios for Canada–Quebec relations. The entanglement of politics
and economics has been a national theme in Canada ever since
Confederation. One of Fallis’s conclusions is that it would be in
Canada’s economic interests to keep the country as it is.

This book would have assisted Canadians as they mulled over the options
presented to them before the 1992 referendum. Now that the latest
constitutional crisis is behind us, it is doubtful that this book will
attract a large number of readers, although it contains some interesting
ideas.
