Review

This directory does a great job identifying the organizations that are
dedicated to global issues facing humanity. It is mainly of value to
young people who want to help solve the kinds of problems associated
with developing countries. More than 700 organizations are profiled
(with phone and fax numbers, plus addresses). Also included is an
annotated bibliography of about 240 books and other resources dealing
with aspects of employment and life abroad.

The guide seems to be a little bit confusing at first, but like most
books of its kind, it takes some skimming and refining in order to know
how the book is arranged and what is available for perusal. For example,
there are exchange programs, government agencies to consult, employment
agencies, learner centres, nongovernmental organizations (such as the
Red Cross and the United Nations), and private firms—all are listed
and summarized by how you want to approach employment abroad. Hachey
also lists international study programs (mainly “international
relations”) offered at Canadian, British, and American universities.

The long-term strategy should include learning the foreign language
needed (that’s covered here); studying abroad or getting into exchange
programs; and selecting a job that will be both satisfying and
financially rewarding. It’s not easy to get a foreign job, but with
the help of this book, some money for initial expenses, and some letters
of reference, it can be done.
