Review

In his fourth collection, Elston, a full-time sports cartoonist at The
Calgary Sun, offers 118 of his satirical cartoons, which have previously
appeared in either The Calgary Sun or The Edmonton Sun, Inside Hockey,
The Hockey News, and Sports Illustrated. Organized into five sections,
the vast majority of the full-page cartoons deal with the National
Hockey League and, more specifically, with events related to the
1993–94 regular season and playoffs as well as to the strike-shortened
1994–95 season and playoffs. Sandwiched between these four sections is
the “Wide World of Elston” section, which contains 26 cartoons that
focus principally on happenings in the Canadian Football League and
professional baseball. Since satire’s impact, in part, depends on how
much knowledge the reader brings to the subject, the humor in some of
Elston’s more situation-specific cartoons may be lost on the less well
informed. However, in the main, sports fans, especially hockey
aficionados, will be chuckling and belly-laughing their way through most
of the book’s delightful contents.
