Review

Some of the aphorisms, observations, and maxims collected here have been
previously published, others were created between 1983 and 1988, and
still others are more recent. Arranged A through Z, all of them are
self-evident cynicisms such as “computers cannot guess,” or
“temples are prisons,” or “without wine there would be no
worship.” Kafka wrote these too, but his were a bit more provocative.
When I was growing up, we used to play a game called “Confucius
say:” and stick in the most outlandish things. Lo and behold, here are
the answers in print. Try it yourself—“Confucius say: When the
wolves elect the shepherd, the sheep die.” It makes the book more
enjoyable.
