Review

This is the 4th volume in a series prepared by Toronto historian and
bookseller Robert Stamp. The sole collected record of the deaths of
notable Canadians, The Canadian Obituary Record is simply invaluable.
Generally accurate, well-written, and simply and clearly organized, this
is an example of a useful reference volume.

But that does not mean that it is perfect. There are errors in the
entry for A. Bruce Matthews (he was not 32 when he commanded a division
in Northwest Europe), Senator Stanley Waters’s name is spelled
incorrectly, and General Desmond Smith did not command an armoured
division, but an armoured brigade, in World War II. Minor slips all, and
most likely attributable to errors in the newspaper obituaries that
perforce provide Stamp with his sources. Still, users should be aware
that they may have to cross-check information here against other
sources.
