Review

Pearen’s family has lived on Ontario’s Manitoulin Island since 1864.
For nearly two decades, she has been gathering information about its
history and lore. She now lives in Ottawa, and has prepared numerous
guides to locations in Canada and the United States.

This book is organized into five automobile tours. Pearen also
describes the early history of the island, its architecture, the La
Cloche Mountains, and interesting geographical features found on the
island. There are several black-and-white photos. Maps are clear and
adequate, Distances are in both metric and imperial measures.

Pearen has an easy, conversational writing style, and a way of making
the early settlements come to life. Anyone who has visited or lived on
Manitoulin Island will enjoy this book.
