Review

Murray describes a “comfortable” cookbook as one that is well used,
“one that you will turn to time after time for easy recipes that
become completely familiar.” Her own book certainly fills these
criteria: these recipes offer ease of preparation and warmingly good
family food. Contents include Snacks and Starters; Soups; Breads,
Muffins and Breakfast Stuff; Main Courses (including the headings
Chicken, Pork, Beef, Veal, Lamb, Fish and Seafood, Egg Dishes, Beans,
and Pizza and Pasta); Side Dishes; and Salads, Endings and Finishing
Touches, along with interspersed food facts and tips. Recipes are
straightforward and easy to follow, giving both metric and imperial
measurements; each is accompanied by a chatty personal note. Includes
instructions for restocking a pantry; a full index adds to the book’s
usefulness. An attractive homespun-looking cover accurately suggests the
tempting nature of the Canadian cookery described within.
