Review

The nine well-written stories in this collection all have a sharp bite;
and, just like cats, they are unpredictable and totally different from
each other.

“Uncle Tom Bragg Comes to the MD of Rocky View” is the story of a
pioneer with an original idea for making money. What happens when a
sunflower seed takes root in an unusual place is the basis of
“Sunflowers.” “Striptease” is a disturbing story that literally
gets right down to the bone of our obsession with the human body. The
narrator in “Checkup” goes from being an ordinary man to a murderer
after receiving a phonecall. “I Am a Gateman” is full of detail and
emotion as Margoshes chronicles the day’s activities of the man who
opens a gate. Aliens find out that Earth’s problems are not so easy to
solve in “The Body Snatchers.” Reading “The Cat Came Back”
causes one to think twice about making a vet’s appointment for the
cat. “Lady of the Lake” reveals the truth behind the Loch Ness
Monster. “Gag” ends the collection with an aging comedian writing
jokes for Jesus.
