Review
Warhaft is a well-known restaurant critic for the Winnipeg Free Press.
In her reviews, she offers information on menus, specialties, service,
presentation, prices, licencing, and wheelchair access.
This book is a guide to more than eighty restaurants in and around
Winnipeg. In the introduction, Warhaft explains her
“qualifications,” and explains why some restaurants may or may not
be included. The restaurants are listed in alphabetical order. She has
included restaurants for every price range and taste. She has
established five price categories based on an average dinner for two,
from “Rock-bottom” to “Very expensive.” She includes an index by
type of restaurant (such as Open Air, Bakery, etc.), and has also
included several out-of-town restaurants.
This is a book I will refer to often. Warhaft’s frank, objective
observations make interesting reading, and she is known for her reliable
reviews. I would like to see a map in future editions, or at least an
index by areas of the city. Also, in the reviews of the out-of-town
restaurants, a mention of driving distance would be helpful.
This is a useful book, and I recommend it to anyone who has occasion to
“eat out” in Winnipeg.
