Review

Bacon’s encyclopedia of guitars is an extraordinary compilation of
facts, figures, photos, and history of today’s most revered
instrument. From the introduction on, Bacon reveals a visual feast of
elaborate photos of all the guitars he writes about. He clearly explains
to readers that the book is for everyone—from the guitar novice to the
most informed guitar wizard. It is a huge claim but one that he
successfully fulfills.

The flawless text describes the instrument’s historical progression
and explores all areas and genres of the guitar family; it does not
forsake classical roots for the more popular rock. By dissecting each
guitar, Bacon allows the reader to see the mechanics and anatomy of each
instrument, as well as the hows and whys of the sound each emits.

In a world of ever-changing fads and fancies, Bacon stays constant and
fair to the masters of the modern age. For example, he doesn’t allow
Gibson to outshine Fender, and he doesn’t indicate any particular
preferences as he compares and contrasts various makes and models.
Instead he explores the origin of modern guitars, the myths of the bass,
the world of acoustic guitars, the many facets of the electric debate,
and future trends.

The Ultimate Guitar Book is an incredible stroll through the guitar
world, informing the amateur as well as the most seasoned guitarist. It
is highly recommended as both a reference guide and a story. A
comprehensive and concise glossary is the crowning glory of this
fantastic book.
