Review

This resource book is devoted mainly to providing profiles of more than
two hundred and fifty women from all over Canada who have expertise in
matters of development, environment, peace, and social justice. It is
bilingual, with many of the women providing a sidebar, usually under a
photograph, offering a synthesis in the other official language of their
background, interests, and aims.

Various other features supplement the 265 pages of profiles. “Some
Women of Distinction” are highlighted, and the back of the book
includes statistics on women in public life across Canada. A resources
section gives the addresses of national and regional networks, and lists
funding sources. Besides this directory, the Canadian Research Institute
for the Advancement of Women is preparing and will maintain a database
of several hundred additional women with similar expertise: the names of
the first 150 or so are given here.

As the editors says, this directory “meets the needs of organizations
and businesses requiring a range of skills, including speakers, workshop
leaders, animators, facilitators, writers, researchers, editors, and
graphic designers.” The indexes are particularly helpful: in both
languages, they are arranged by geography (area of residence) and by
subject specialty. Significantly enough, perhaps, there is only one
woman with expertise in “nontraditional occupations,” but why there
are eleven in “low-level flight testing” and only one in
“international cinema” might need some research.
