Review
This unpretentious, informative paperback would be an extremely useful
acquisition for anyone contemplating a skiing holiday in British
Columbia, especially for first-time visitors. The text is clearly
organized and presented. The format deals with every major skiing area
of B.C. (Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, Whistler, Okanagan,
Kootenays, Rockies, Cariboos, North and High Country) in a separate
section. Also included are brief sections on cat-, heli-, and
Nordic-skiing, as well as on ski touring. Each chapter presents detailed
information on the major resorts located in each area: types and number
of lifts, number and evaluation of available runs, average snowfall,
hotels, restaurants, apres-ski facilities, how to get there, and current
fees. Each resort discussion is preceded by a rudimentary map of the
resort area and the ski runs. On all counts the write-ups are by a
knowledgeable insider to the B.C. ski scene, informed about both the
slopes and the facilities. Such experience lends special weight to
Doughty’s analysis of the ski runs.
Altogether, the book offers loads of helpful advice for all levels of
skiers as well as much honest information guaranteed to save the visitor
frustration and irritation. It also includes a number of addresses to
write to for additional information.
Trust Doughty’s chatty analysis of each resort area. This is no
glossy tourist-hype publication, but a down-to-earth appraisal as seen
though the squinty eyes of a veteran of B.C.’s snow-covered slopes.
