Review

Photographic essay, travelogue, and feast for the eyes, Atlantic Canada
is a visual feast for those who already know the Maritimes and those who
would like to go there. The structure is simple: one chapter for each of
four provinces. Well-known photographer Witney’s previous books
include The Lighthouse, The Barn, and Spirit of the West. His stunning
shots celebrate both land and people. His seascapes are particularly
fine.

Bruce, an editor and freelance writer, moved to Nova Scotia in the
early 1970s and now lives in the farmhouse where his father was born.
His knowledge of the terrain and its history, along with his love for
it, combine with his ironic humor and his instinct for drama. Bruce
jokes about his family’s return to their roots, where “fog throttles
the joy of June, the land sprouts rocks, and good jobs are as rare as
politicians who don’t make promises.”

Detailed maps and sections on special tourist sites make the book
useful for those who are planning a trip Down East. Anyone who spends a
little time with these photographs is likely to wind up in that
category..
