Review

How Religious Is God? offers a rendition of Christian faith that is
anything but holier-than-thou. Stevens, a United Church minister and
folk singer, addresses many questions pertinent to contemporary
Christian thought—e.g., sin, sex, and salvation. This should prove
interesting to the religious and nonreligious alike, in that his
style—highly readable and light-hearted—follows the pattern set by
the late C.S. Lewis: a fellow traveller down life’s road, rather than
an aloof pastor.

There can be no mistaking the pervading influence of C.S. Lewis (to
whom, by his own admission, Stevens is heavily indebted). Like Lewis,
Stevens espouses the Arminian position that humanity’s major problems
are its own fault—the results of the abuse of free will—and that the
Almighty is beyond reproach. God, in Stevens’s eyes, is guilty only of
loving the human race enough to set it free, and longs for the
opportunity to shower each life with unspeakable spiritual riches.

Though written from the United Church tradition, this book will prove
satisfactory for readers of any religious affiliation. Certainly, it
will clear up many popular misconceptions of the Christian religion. A
must for serious fans of the Lewis legacy!
