Review
Like most titles published by corporate firms, this one is designed to
attract business. An introductory page sings a note repeated often in
the text: “The information and analysis contained in this book are not
intended to substitute for competent professional advice”—and just
in case the reader wants to approach a specific individual from Deloitte
& Touche, persons in Toronto, Hamilton, Markham, Montreal, and Vancouver
are listed as contacts.
The book’s blatantly commercial purpose should not, however, lead one
to reject it out of hand, for this is a well-organized and readable text
that takes a reader through the stages of incorporating a business,
running it, and expanding it, as well as disposing of it. The last two
chapters are probably most worthy of attention, since each employs an
interesting case study to show how many of the ideas discussed in
earlier parts of the book apply in a real-life situation.
The book is based on the law that was in effect in February 1991. But
even as it grows increasingly outdated, it should alert readers to the
kinds of tax questions they should pose when consulting their
accountants.
