Review

Toop and Williams have brought together a vast array of information
about herbaceous perennials for the Prairie gardener. Their use of
illustrations and photographs enhances the information provided in the
text. The authors have selected 148 perennials for the book, plus a
separate section on hardy bulbs.

The book provides background and detailed information about specific
genera or species of herbaceous perennials. The background section
discusses propagation, cultivation, design, and care of perennials.
Included with the genus and species section are introductions,
descriptions of each group or plant, culture (growing conditions),
design use, and propagation.

The reference table at the end of the work is organized by Latin name
and summarizes pertinent details about the perennials only. This table
also serves as the index to the detailed plant descriptions. The common
names are not cross-referenced in any alphabetical form to the Latin
names, so those who are unfamiliar with the proper names of plants may
spend a bit of time searching for plant descriptions. This book provides
a wealth of information on a wide variety of perennials, useful to
gardeners throughout Canada.
