Review

Good health-care information is essential to women, who are often the
guardians of not only their own but also their children’s well-being.
But useful information is too often provided in a format that is
inaccessible to the women it is meant to serve. Only one-third of
Canadian women have more than a high-school education, while most
health-care information is written at university level. Taking Care, a
revised edition updated particularly in the areas of birth control and
sexually transmitted diseases, is a book meant to remedy this
information gap by presenting the important facts women need to know, in
language that all can understand. Issues addressed are eating well;
weight control; over-the-counter drugs; you and your doctor; sex; birth
control; vaginal infections; pap tests; examining your breasts; and
menopause. The book is simply written in outsize easy-to-read print, and
illustrated with diagrams where applicable.
