Review

Malcolm Lowry’s stature as a novelist is matched by his prominence as
a fascinating person. Lowry was English, but did some of his best work
during his years in Canada. His letters were abundant, and this first
volume gives a detailed picture of his character and experiences and
provides indispensable information about his writing.

Editor Sherrill Grace has provided a long introduction, a bibliography,
and very thorough notes. As well, Lowry’s odd marginal sketches have
been reproduced, and the large, handsome volume is copiously illustrated
with photographs.

Lowry buffs will find this work indispensable. It replaces the Selected
Letters co-edited by Lowry’s widow, who suppressed a great deal,
including all the letters to Lowry’s first wife.
