Review

Miller presents himself as a highly successful sports psychologist who
has been able to help numerous athletes and business executives to
improve their performance using a variety of relaxation, visualization,
and self-motivation activities. The book depends heavily on anecdotal
material and stories about “name” athletes using the skills
described. In structure it appears to be close to one of Miller’s
seminars, complete with illustrations straight off the flip charts.

While the material presented is good, it is very basic; there is little
depth or consideration of difficulties in using these skills. Reading
the book begins to feel like hearing a long series of coaches’ “pep
talks.” This may appeal to the highly sports-minded, or to those in a
great hurry. Many readers will come away wanting less-simplistic
prescriptions and more context for using the skills.
