Review
Canadian Native literature, including that of the Métis and Inuit, is
influenced by the oral traditions of the various Native cultures. Though
these traditions may be unfamiliar to non-Native readers, the strength
and beauty of the writing is apparent in this anthology of
Native-Canadian literature.
The text is divided into several sections: Myths and Legends,
Traditional Poetry, Memoirs, Biography and Autobiography, Short Stories,
(excerpts from) Novels, and Contemporary Poetry. Each section is
prefaced by a short essay describing the pieces in it. There are also
notes about the contributors.
The collection features works by such well-known writers as Chief Dan
George, Pauline Johnson, John Tetso, George Clutesi, Maria Campbell,
Markoose, and Rita Joe. There is also an impressive sampling of works by
less-well-known Native writers.
This anthology is important because it provides insight into the rich
and varied backgrounds and literary traditions of Native writers. It
should be included in Canadian literature courses.
