Review

In July 1944, RCAF navigator John Harvie and his bomber command crew
were shot down over German-occupied France. For the 20-year-old Harvie,
the lone survivor of the crash, it was the beginning of a prolonged
nightmare.

In this gripping true story, Harvie recounts how a French family
provided him with a safe haven for several days, his attempt to return
to England with the help of the French resistance, his discovery by the
Gestapo and transport first to Buchenwald and then to a POW camp, and
his long forced march with other POWs in the dead of winter.

Harvie, who endured and witnessed so much misery, refused to be
consumed by it. His strength of spirit and compassion, and his ability
to see beauty and humor amid the most soul-wrenching experiences, shine
through this powerful and technically accomplished memoir. It deserves a
place on every bookshelf, not to mention the attention of filmmakers.
